The 90's Mixtape - Underrated/Unknown

So, I just did this Mixtape with lots of underrated/unknown stuff form the 90's,
that nobody knows about (and probably doesnt even want to as well).

"Mostly xvx, everything from hardcore/metal(core) to screamo, thrash and death...
Just order a copy and take a listen in your car, or wherever you can still find a tape deck nowadays, but don't worry if you can't, they'll also come with a download link!
The tapes will also come with a huge bookelt, so that I have the space to write two or three
sentences about each band - as I said, this is not the usual "unknown" like green rage,
day of suffering or facedown... some are "unknown" like about 10 listeners on lastfm or
being together as a band for just a few months!
First Press strictly limited to 25 - self-dubbed and self-produced/printed/etc.
(as diy as it can get)"

I still have some copies, so feel free to order one (the hard copies will also come with a nice
extra leaflet and a kind of "poster" on the back of the booklet, which you cant get in digital! ;-)
Anyway, as I want all of you to check this shit out, here is the link:

Falling Down / Day Of Suffering

To say it with Rat(Statement)'s words: "The best vegan metal band ever. perdiod."
So, what other advertisement do you need to give them a listen?
I guess DOS are pretty well known anyway, but I recently noticed that only few people
know about what they did before that awesome LP - a pretty good EP! ;-)

Founded in 1994, by members of In Emptiness, under the name Falling Down,
later changed the name to Day Of Suffering and put it to an end in 1998,
leaving just one unreleased song for another record that sadly never got recorded.
but played a re-union show in 2009 and another one in 2012 I guess...
all of them still being vegan straight edge!!!

Tell me if you got more information you think I should know about,
like what they're doing nowadays... I just know that Steve, their guitarist
plays in some crappy punk/powerviolence band called No Tomorrow.
(and that paul (drums) played in a metalcore band called Sennacherib in the early 00's)

Tell me if you have the In Emptiness Demo - as far as I know thats the only thing they released,
a demo entitled Still Life Euphoria in 1994. Though I never listened to it... Thanks!

Vegan Reich

Okey, actually I don't felt the urge to do a blogspot post about this band...
certainly not because I'd have any problem with them or they werent awesome enough,
fucking go to hell if you think different - this is legendary!
But because everyone already knows enough about them and all their stuff
(which unfortunatley isnt that much) is already widely available.
Nevertheless someone just told me that he's desperately looking
for "320kbps" rips of their stuff... duh, I never paid much attention to that shit,
but hey, who am I to refuse the request of someone I barely know? :P
(and yeah, it actually sounds better than 128kbps or even less!)
...but for the "real" sound, you'd better invest some money and get your hands on a vinyl copy!
at least the Hardline 7" should be available from some discogs/ebay sellouts.
(and it comes with awesome hardline inlet's/flyers)

So, anyway, just search google for some detailed information...
There is even a wikipedia entry!

Members were formerly (and meanwhile) active in Naturecore, Amenity and House Of Suffering.
During their hiatus (after '92) some of them formed the reggae band Captive Nation Rising
and later another straight edge hardcore band under the name Pressure.
Andrew Hurley (who played drums on their last EP, Jihad) is the only member
who constantly has been in lots of other bands I guess, and still is! To name just a few:
Killtheslavemaster, Racetraitor, Project Rocket, Arma Angelus, The Kill Pill,
Fall Out Boy, Burning Empires, Enabler, The Damned Things, Focused Minds, ...

Reprisal

Another late 90's / early 00's XVX Hardcore Band.
They started in '96 under the name "Statement" (seemed to be a quite popular name...)
but shortly after changed to Reprisal and released a Split 7" with Greed, who are from Italy as well.
Yeah, they are from Italy btw. - though they sound pretty much like H8000!
...I guess they also released a Demo under the name "Statement" in '96,
if anyone has a copy, please tell me. Would be cool to hear it!

Anyway, shortly after they had to change some members due to questions of commitment
and recorded for their first full length - Where Heavy Gloom Dominates.
And yeah, it definitely is pretty heavy. Death Metal influenced Hardcore with lots of
chugga-chugga and beatdown like parts (what is not really my cup of tea though).

After this (in late '98) things changed - they decided to continue as Hardline (Pro-Life XVX) Band,
and so they had to change some members (I guess only the drummer) again.
They wouldnt play their old songs anymore and so they recorded for their by far best full length,
Boundless Human Stupidity in 2000 (which was released on Good Life then).
Really good Death Metal influenced oldschool Metalcore with some Hardcore/H8000 attitude
and militant Vegan Straight Edge lyrics!

After some more line-up changes they released their last full length in 2002,
Mailorder Knife Set - and yeah, they changed a lot... musically...
There is only really few metal influence on this one, more newschool hardcore
and perhaps even nu metal... who knows... I dont like it that much, but to each his own I guess.

Contend

Vegan Straight Edge 90's "chugga-chugga" Hardcore Band from Nevada.
Unfortunately they've just been around for two or three years and never really reached out...
So, I dont know much about them or the members - don't hesitate to educate me if you know! ;-)

Lyricwise they're aiming for revolution, anarchism, feminism, veganism, sobriety, etc.
Their EP came out on Catalyst Records... and they're cool!

Rage Of A Prophet / The Battle / Black Hill

Two awesome vegan straight edge bands, that both did their only release in 2007
At first I thought about adding them to the Absence/Destroy Babylon post,
as it are the same people like in Destroy Babylon, but than I thought that it'd go to far...

Anyway, Rage Of A Prophet is pure 90's Style Metalcore (with a poor recording).
Really nice name, heh? So you should know what to expect from a band that got their name
from a Vegan Reich song... hardline (or at least militant xvx pro-life metal)!
As I already said, they were part of the GRK Crew and shared members with bands like
Destroy Babylon, End Of Suffering, Timor, The Battle, Black Hill, etc.
I guess they were a pretty short-lived project... but if anyone has any more information,
feel free to share them with me!

The Battle was a one man project (like Statement, you know? :P )
from the singer of Rage Of A Prophet, who also played bass in Destroy Babylon
and drums in Black Hill (tell me if you know something about them - couldnt find anything...)
More (90's) Hardcore than Metalcore... and heavily Krishna influenced!
There is a Green Rage coversong on it - to give you an Idea... chugga-chugga!

The Battle - All Shall Perish (2007)

edit:
Just had a talk with Lars - that "The Battle" guy who also was in ROAP and Black Hill.
And he gave me another ROAP Song - Brotherhood and the two Black Hill demo's!
Unfortunately he couldnt provide any more information or even artwork's for them...
I guess they have been pressed on tape and had any kind of artwork, havent they? :P

Anyway, here is at least what they've released - Metallic Straight Edge Hardcore.

Absence / Destroy Babylon

Metallic 90's Mosh Hardcore (Chugga-Chugga) from Italy.
They were founded in '94 and after some shows they also recorded a demo, entitled
"The Epilogue Of Our Pain" (which unfortunately seems to be impossible to find), around '95 (?).
After this they went on a short hiatus, because Fabio, their singer went to the USA,
getting in touch with lots of Hardline people and movements (Vanguard, etc.)
But after he returned, '96 (?), he picke up things with absence again - more radical than before,
wrote a Hardline Zine called  "War Bulletin" (anyone has a copy of this? i'd really like to see!)
and recorded their first 7" - "From The Bloodshed" with which they also toured the UK.
Oh, and their Guitarist Stefano started Cycle Records, where he would later release
several Records with his other band One Fine Day as well!

In '98 they released their first full length - "Shall The Sentence Be Death"
on the UK based label Screams Of Salvation (seams like they've made some connections).
Still 90's Style Chugga-Chugga Metal Hardcore like Green Rage or (early) Earth Crisis.
Lyricwise you can really see their Hardline ideals (Pro-Life and stuff like that).

Their second full length - "I'll Cast The First Stone" - released on Catalyst Records in '99,
is way more tactical and melodical - I like this one the most, cause you can actually call it Metalcore!
Also has some more quiet parts and some of these florida metal parts, like Shai Hulud, you know?
So, I guess I just want to say that this is really a good album and anything but boring!
But decide for yourself, check them out - every release is worth a listen!

Anyway, after they played their last show on Ieper Fest 2002, they went on some kind
of hiatus, just to return in 2006 - still standing strong, still the same beliefs!
But as they noticed that their sound has changed, they also changed their name and so
they released a killer 90's Metalcore album (with some Newschool Hardcore influence of course),
under the name "Destroy Babylon - By The Knife" in 2007.
But as far as I know they have broken up as well, at least there is no sign of life since 2010...
For more information on them check out this cool Interview with Fabio, on Sparks Of Dissent!

edit: already got their demo! :-)

Gather

Gather was a vegan straight edge hardcore band from California, US.
The band was formed by: Eva (vocals), Dustin (drums),
Allan (guitar) & Randy (bass). They had a strong green anarchist attitude
and didn’t mince their mouth for what they stand for.

They released their first demo, together with a zine in 2004. With assistance
from Scott Crouse, band member of Earth Crisis, on an additional
guitar part for one song and the producing,
they spread the word out to the world and especially their first tour.

Because the band xMaroonx from Germany was not able
to come to the states in 2004, they filled-in for the well known Total
Liberation Fest Tour. A short time later the official demo, also called
Total Liberation 7“ was released. Henceforth the connections to other vsxe bands
were made and in 2005 the split with the awesome band Seven Generations came out.

This was also the second and at the same time last 7“ from Gather,
but fortunately not their last record. One year later, in 2006, I guess their biggest step
to become more popular, was the European Tour with To Kill.
The 12“ „Beyond the Ruins“ was released the same year on xCatalystx Records.
By the way the other two, were released on New Eden Records.

Together with their last release, there were also made some with special covers,
for their reunion show as a tribute for Seven Generations, whom played on
that date their last show. As some of you might know the date was 2009-10-24.
They toured together with bands like To Kill, Seven Generations, Kingdom and Punch.

Today, both Eva and Dustin are playing still music, but in other different bands.
Eva is singer in the band called Rats in the wall, Dustin is in the band: The Videos.
Unfortunately I have no information regarding the other two old band members,
but if you came across them and any updates, feel free to hit me up!

Dark Day Dawning

A blogspot post I'm actually planing for years now,
but I just wanted to do it when I have everything from them.
Now I still dont have (and already forgot to look for the last missing record as well),
so if anyone has their first 7", entitled "She was so changed, he did not recognize her",
please message me immediately! Until than, here's the rest:

A band which actually doesn't really play an existing genre...
something like melodic 90's hardcore, that somehow turns into metalcore
and mathrock or screamo during some parts... but emotinal and energetic!
The band contains members of Shai Hulud and Fires & Floods,
what could probably give you an Idea of how they sound!

Again, Im grateful for any information you can provide...
they are way to underrated/unknown that I could find out much more
about them on the internet... I dont even have proper artworks for their records!

Abandon

Vegan Straight Edge 90's Style Metalcore from California.
Besides being damn awsome, you can also find a strong political stance in their lyrics
(and of course subjects like Animal Liberation and Sobriety as well!)

So, yeah... it actually isn't that long since they disbanded... end of 2010 I guess (?)
But somehow it seemed like they've already been forgotten...
or most people didnt even had the chance to get to know them.

For more info check their blogspot (as long as it's still online)

Liar

The definition of (Vegan, Straight Edge) H8000 Metal!
I was shocked when I realized that their stuff isnt available on the internet/on other blogspots.
I mean this is so damn important and far beyond awesome - seriously fuck you if you think differently!

Their first LP is thrashy (Slayer influenced) deathmetal that already has that cool H8000 style,
which Congress (with whom they shared some members) played as well (...just with less metal)!
Their Split with Family Of Dog, as well as the 2nd LP just showed their progress and improvement.
Personally I probably do like Invictus the most - although that Falls Of Torment definitely has
the better Artwork... I mean, just look at it, it's pure fucking metal, isnt it?!
Their third LP just picked up some more melodic influences - kind of technical death metal.
And they started to add some (metal style) singing here and there, which didnt sound bad...
In 2002, when their fourth Album was released, they switched the label as well (to Alveran Records)
and began to add some more Metalcore elements (probably due some line-up changes).
Their Split with Sunrise from Poland as well as their last, final release just followed the same pattern,
more and more metalcore elements, but less oldschool style (death/thrash) metal...
Technically they just got better and better, without question - just listen to some of the solo's
on Murder Manifesto and tell me you dont want to murder someone to it!
It's like Satan in person has written them! - but on the other hand,
you kind of miss the oldschool style a little bit... So I guess it just depends on how you feel,
on what you want to listen to at the moment - everything they released is really great!

In 2006, when they disbanded, the members formed Your God Is Dead.
Some of them remain(ed) active in other band's as well, like: Rise And Fall, Hive Destruction,
Amenra, Oathbreaker, Tyrant's Kall, Trenchfoot, Blood Redemption, ...
