Withdrawn / Evanesce

Awesome Vegan Straight Edge 90's (Black)Metal Band you've probably heard of
They've changed a lot during the time - sound (with each recording) and members (through the years)
In the beginning (Figures - 1996) it was Martin VonBargen aka Onion (Solstice) on Guitar,
David Fergusson aka Mortiis on Drums and two "random" guys on Vocals and Bass
aka Schoky & Martin Wainwright (concerning Tom)!
(The Band was formed in 1993, so there might have been some recordings
before this Demo as well, if you know something more - please tell me!)
However, these tracks sounded much more like Metal with Hardcore influence, compared to...

...A Certain Innate Suffering (1997), which sounded like fucking true British Black Metal!
Chris Meadows (Slavearc, Koreisch) did the Vocals on that one
and Foster (Slavearc, Koreisch) the Bass - so you can easily imagine where the lyrics went as well.

In 1999 their first full length followed - Seeds of Inhumanity.
This was when they caught my attention, musically - much more 90's Metalcore!
Members changed as well - The Vocals are now contributed by Ian Leck (Vorhees)!
I read somewhere "like Integrity meets Iron Maiden" what matches very good.

This was when they changed their line-up again and became Evanesce (in 2000)!
Jason hearne replaced Ian on Vocals and Colin Robertson replaced Phil Smith on the Bass
Anyway, even if I wont make friends with this, to me this is musically their best recording
really good Black/Death Metal influenced 90's Metalcore!

A Split LP with Conquest Of Steel followed in 2002
It has been labeld as Melodic Death metal on some pages ..and I'm fine with that!
(although that I somehow tend to label everything I like with Metalcore)

In 2006 after they changed the line-up one last time,  the final Record Secure The Shadow
got released. Grant Richardson (Slide) became their last Vocalist.
Martin/Onion and David/Mortiis remain as the only two constant members.

Members went on to bands like:
Walk The Plank, SSS, Meatlocker, Sick Fuckin O, Thekevorkiansolution, ...

(I'll add better pic's and information if I got some - feel free to contribute!)

Within Walls

Not really the stuff I'd normally post (90's Metalcore), but hey - they're pretty cool as well!
Metallic, yet emotional, melodic new school hardcore with a political message!
Their earlier stuff was more melodic/emotional,
but they became more metallic hardcore from release to release
I instantly fell in love with their selftitled 7" - still the best if you ask me!
Since they (for some inexplicable reason) never really reached out,
you can still buy their two full lengths over at Cobra Records!
Do so if you like what you hear!

(trivial info: I wanted to do this post for more than a year now,
but I just couldnt find their last LP in digital form - so I decided get it ripped
from the vinyl about half a year ago. Some weeks ago I found the files on my computer again
and finally managed it to cut them as well ...and here you go!)

Members are now active in El Camino Car Crash - check them out! ;-)

Primal Age / Absone

Primal Age were founded in 1997 and played Vegan Straight Edge Metalcore,
pretty much Death/Black Metal influenced to that time.
They first released two songs on the The Nightmare Remains... Comp. 1998
(if there was a demo before that, I dont know of it - please enlighten me if you do!)
And then a song on the Picardie Rock Comp. 1999
(which I unfortunately don't have, it somehow seems to be impossible to find...)
Shortly after that their CD The Light To Purify dropped on Eye Witness Records.

During that time three (and later four) of the five members started the side project Absone
(which shortly after became their main project).
So, Primal Age was laid to rest (before it was revived in 2006)
Absone sounded more like the typical Vegan Straight Edge 90's Metalcore band
and on their Lp they developed their sound even more,
sounding like Morning Again with some Black/Death Metal like parts.

The revival of Primal Age let me first think of a sold out modern metalcore band,
but nothing like this is the case!
Sure, their style is more modern orientated, but they still remained faithfull!
(Still holding on to the edge and all that as well!)
Really worth to be checked out!

(after the Absone stuff of course, cause that is really sick!)

Legion

Short-Lived H8000 Metalcore with a strong Death/Black Metal influence!
Shared (Part-Time) Members with Deformity & Nations On Fire (Guitar).
Members went on to Bands like:
Morda, Flatcat, Blood Redemption, Crimson Falls, ...

However, thats everything I know...
Demo was more Metal - CD more Death/Black Metal and the final Song more Metalcore

Bound X By X Modern X Age - The Zine #1

Working on a DIY-Hardcore Zine lately, that focuses on The Vegan Straight Edge
and some controversial topics like Hardline and Political Correctness.
Special thanks to my friends Sebastian and Julian for helping me with Reviews, Columns and Stuff!

Out soon...

Tell me what you think about it!

Edit:
Did some simple Flyers... spread them if you're cool!

I'll probably put up a bigcartel store in a week or two!
(Short Pre-Order phase to estimate if I should press more or less then I thought
and actually to get some money for getting them pressed :P )

Thanks!

Edit:
Some small "contest" - Where are the Letters in the Font from?
As everyone is already guessing anyway... I just though, the one that can Name me all 19 Letters
(Bound X By X Modern X Age including the 3 Xes)
will get a free copy (and probably something cool I'll randomly throw in)
So, start guessing seriously and send me your e-mails! ;-)

Btw. I have a lot of stuff (unknown 90's metalcore shit) to post when I'm finally done with the zine!

Abnegation

More dubious stuff for my blogspot!
This is Satanic Pro-Life Hardline 90's Metalcore/Black Metal!

There are enough (well-written) blogspot posts about this band,
for example the one at Path To Misery,
but somehow none of them put up a "complete" discography...
So it is up to me - at least I wont have to say much about them! ;-)

Just know, if you want to check them out,
that they "really" changed their style and genre during their releases!
Their first Demo Life For A Life and the 7" Extinguish The Sickness were Metallic Hardcore,
the 7" more in the direction of Metalcore, but still comparable to other
Vegan Straight Edge 90's Metalcore Bands from that era.
In The Eye Of The Storm and Sown In The Remains already had some serious Black Metal influence
and let, together with the As The Stone Strikes The Cedar Session & their Split with Chapter, guess
what would follow - Verses Of The Bleeding and their two final tracks from the
One Hell Of A Compilation - pure black metal with some grindcore influence.
Still Hardline and Pro-Life, but more and more Satanic lyrics.

Abnegation - Their two final Tracks from the One Hell Of A Compilation - 1999

Statement

Militant Vegan Straight Edge Solo-Project from Patrick "Rat" Poole
And the face of the Hardline movement for a while...
at least the cover art from the Prepare For Battle 7"

And thats also where I'd like to begin - although that there were the "early" Statement as well,
the first Demo recordings are from '85, but these have nothing to do
with the Statement that I'm featuring here...
Until Prepare For Battle it was pure Anarcho-Punk.
Already Militant Vegan Straight Edge with cool lyrics and stuff,
but musically not really my cup of tea!
However, if youre interested in that stuff, look somewhere else, or write me! ;-)
(Demo '85, Muted Existence Split, Demo '86, Fairies Can't Fly, Not For Punks,
The Apostles Split LP, The Apostles Split EP)

So, in '90, when Muttaqi and Vegan Reich put Hardline on the map,
Rat decided to go more in the Thrash Metal, Crossover direction and they released
the legendary Prepare For Battle 7" on Hardline Records.
Two years later, he recorded the Vegan Inquisition EP, which should also
be released on Hardline, but never was... Muttaqi went to Jamaica
and Rat turned his back on Hardline.
(What most people don't know, he never "really" was a hardliner...
militant Vegan Straight Edge - yes, but religious and homophobic - no.)
Anyway, with this record he went more and more into the direction
of Slayer influenced Thrash metal.
After that, two years later the Split 7" with Dim-Mak was released,
also a good record, but I, personally, dont like the way how he tries to sing
on that one - fortunately he realized it as well
and so the next release, Genocidal Justice, sounded way better, again!
This time its pure Slayer Thrash Metal - probably comparable to the later Unborn stuff!

There is also some "newer" material, like the song from the Tears Of Gaia & Extinguish Split
and Visions Of No More...
if you have it, or know a way to download it (Tales Of Mysanthropy for example)
from myspace, please let me know! I'll add it, as soon as I got it!

Rat was involved in bands like:
The Apostles, Cracked Cop Skulls, Muted Existence, Riot/Clone,
Arrogance, Anorexia, Unborn, Talisman, ...

edit:
Found some more Statement Songs that were hiding on unknown Compilations
(dont worry, I'm doing a Compilations You Should Know About post soon!)

One of the previously unreleased tracks from the Dim-Mak Split Recording Session.
The other one from these Recordings is on the ToG/Extinguish Split.

Kinda different Song... with Tom O'Brien (Unborn, Eakra, etc.) on bass!

Foundation

Vegan Straight Edge New School Metalcore from San Diego
Not to confuse with the current Foundation!
Their 7" came out on X Words of War X when they were still cool (1997)!

I dont know if the members were active anywhere else,
all I know is, that their bassist, Dean Reis, played in some other bands afterwards, like:
The Heartaches, Spider Fever, Sultans, ...

However, I guess it was a kinda short-lived band,
starting in 1996 and breaking up in 1998... but I can be wrong!
I just know, that they recorded their demo in 1996, put it on tape
and then, 1997 on vinyl.
Short time later they've recorded their Split with Ecorche,
which was released in early 1998.
Thereafter I dont know...

If someone knows more - youre very welcome to tell me! :-)

Sevin

Straight Edge Vegan Information Network (SEVIN)
- awesome name -
90's Metalcore band on Militant Records (probably Hardline)

Not really the best quality recordings, but it's good music with a message!
"...these songs are not outwardly dealing with veganism/ earth liberation, they are dealing with human psychology, which is what has put the ecosystem in the threatened condition it is now in..."

Members were also active in bands like:
Autumn, You And I, The Assistant, This Ship Will Sink, In First Person,
Less Life, Manalive, Black Kites, Capacities, ...

If someone has the Demo Tape and could scan the artwork and lyric sheet - would be awesome!

As Friends Rust

Not really the kind of stuff I'd normally post...
Also not really the genre I'd normally listen to, but this band is an awesome exception!
I probably "started to like them", cause of Damien Moyal (Vocals)
and because it started as some kind of side-project of Culture, who I already loved! ;-)
And, yeah... for a long time I only liked the Demo...
But then, when I gave the later stuff, which certainly sounds a lot different
- whole new line-up except of Damien -
a third (or something like that) try, I began to like it (in another way) as well!

While the Demo (The Fists Of Time) sounded very scremo, 90's emo-hc like,
the later releases have gone more and more in the direction of melodic trendy (pop) punk.
Still 90's emo - but more that kind of stuff that you could also hear on the radio! ;-)

In 2002, after their last Release, Damien (the only constant member) left the band
and so the remaining members "morphed" As Friends Rust into Salem...
Who sounded way more like emo influenced indie-rock.

Members (there were a lot over the years) were also active in Bands like:
Culture, Bird Of Ill Omen, Morning Again, Shai Hulud, Poison The Well, Bridgeburn R, Insist, Red Letter Day, Roosevelt, Dead Man's Theory, Argentina, ...

Members (I'll tell which in brackets), went on to bands like:
Damien Done, On Bodies (Damien Moyal), Crucible (Chris Beckham, Thomas Rankine), Army Of Ponch, Bullets To Broadway, Rehasher, Savage Brewtality (Gui Amador), The Rocking Horse Winner (Henry Olmino, Jeronimo Gomez, Matt Crum), Grey Goose, The Sheryl Cro(w) Mags (Kaleb Stewart), Moments In Grace (Tim Kirkpatrick), Carlisle, How Dare You (Zach Swain), ...

Jihad

Nihilistic & Misanthropic Vegan Straight Edge 90's Metalcore
And despite their Name, I'm not 100% sure, if they were "hardline"
They were militant vegans, but I guess/hope not homophobe, religious
and all that other shit which most of the "hardline-bands" were.
At least this is, what I can read in their lyrics and texts from their records...
I mean, they also had a song that could be considered "pro-choice" I guess!

Unfortunately I dont know much about the band,
but I guess they just used this awesome name to piss people off
what I could really understand, by the way ;-)
So dont be afraid, cause this is really good music + lyrics!

Their Demo (which is pressed to vinyl as one side of the Ottawa split)
was more like chaotic and fast, metallic hardcore...
The later releases sounded more 90's metalcore like.
The Gods Forsaken People 7" for example really reminds me
of a more metalcore like version of Lost In Sabbath era Mayday.
They also did a compilation CD (Old Testament)
containing their stuff from 1994 - 1996 and a live concert...

However, as there isnt much information about this band on the internet,
I cant tell you anything more...
So, if you know something - let me know it, too! ;-)
